Specialty Care

Specialty Care | Pet Emergency Treatment and Specialty (PETS) Referral Center

Special care for special pets

In the past decade new and exciting advances have been made in both human and veterinary medicine, allowing both people and pets to live longer and better lives. These developments have created a growing need for advanced veterinary training programs in specialized areas.
Each member of our team of specialists has completed rigorous academic and clinical training extending years beyond the standard four-year veterinary curriculum. Working closely with your family veterinarian, we can offer your pet the best chance of improvement or recovery.

You may refer your patients to our hospital if your patient would benefit from:
• A procedure such as advanced surgery, ultrasound, endoscopy, laparoscopy, or cancer therapy
• A consultation with one of our specialists
• 24-hour critical care
• Advanced testing or therapy, including transfusion therapy and oxygen support.
• Collaborative multispecialty patient management including surgical, internal medicine and/or oncology disciplines.

Internal Medicine

Acting as an extension of your healthcare team, our internal medicine referral service provides management of patients with complex medical problems or requiring advanced diagnostic testing such as ultrasound or endoscopy.
Dr. Jennifer McCown obtained her B.S. in Zoology with Honors from the University of Florida in 2000. She received her Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine degree magna cum laude as the class valedictorian from the University of Florida College Of Veterinary Medicine in 2005, after which she completed a one year small animal medicine and surgery internship at Florida Veterinary Specialists in Tampa, Florida.

Oncology

Our oncology service is driven by the philosophy of improving quality of life for patients with cancer.
Dr. Kathy Andres received her veterinary degree from UC Davis in 2000 where she received multiple academic, clinical performance and oncology research awards. She then completed a one year internship at the Animal Medical Center in New York City in 2001 where she was recognized for her gentle approach to pets and their human companions with the annual Human-Animal Bond award. Dr. Andres completed her oncology residency at a large, private practice in the Spring of 2009 and is currently completing the board certification process. Dr. Andres has also completed the IVAS course in veterinary acupuncture.
We have invested in the advanced equipment necessary for treating patients with complex medical problems, including Doppler color flow ultrasound, video endoscopy, digital radiography, invasive and non-invasive blood pressure monitors, ventilators, advanced anesthetic monitoring equipment, and a comprehensive in-house laboratory.

Referral Policies

Pets requiring specialty care (as identified by you, our referring veterinarian) are accepted on a referral basis only. Please note that we do not provide routine veterinary medical services such as vaccines, routine preventative testing, etc. If you refer a patient to our hospital to see a specialist, please have the client call to schedule an appointment and ask them to bring copies of their pet’s medical information (records, lab results, x-rays). Our specialist will discuss his or her findings with both you and the client.
As our daytime specialty services work hand-in-hand with our 24-hour emergency service, patients admitted on emergency may occasionally “transfer” for advanced care by one of specialists. Before such a transfer of supervision is made, our emergency doctor will contact you to discuss the care of the patient. Our mutual goal is to help our patients make a speedy recovery!
